Enough is Enough, Part 5

By Dr. David Clarke, Ph.D

Note:  this series of blogs is based on my brand-new book, Enough is Enough: How to Leave an Abusive Relationship.  This book is only available on my website.

The Big Idea

1 Samuel 25 presents the Bible's case for escaping your abuser.

The Teaching

Nabal is a classic example of an abusive husband.  He was:  harsh, evil, worthless, foolish, selfish, ungrateful, bitingly sarcastic, arrogant, and had zero empathy.  Abigail, his wife, was stuck with him because in those days, a wife had no rights.

If you live with an abuser, God is talking to you through His servant, Abigail.  God is telling you, clearly and decisively, to follow Abigail's example.  God intervened and presented Abigail with an opportunity to escape her painful, destructive marriage.

Here is an outline of the steps Abigail took to get out of her abusive marriage: 1. when Abigail's family was threatened as a result of Nabal's actions, she took action. 2. Abigail acted, not to protect Nabal, but to protect her family. 3. Abigail told others the truth about her husband. 4. Abigail enlisted the help of others in her escape plan. 5. Abigail did not tell her husband what she was doing. 6. At the right time, Abigail confronted her husband with the truth. 7. Her husband didn't change, Abigail changed. 8. When God offered Abigail a way out of the abuse, she took it. 9. God approved Abigail's assertive behavior and blessed her for it. 10. Abigail got away from her husband and enjoyed a new life of freedom and adventure.

I urge you to follow Abigail's example, and stop tolerating your man's abusive treatment.  God is saying to you:  "You are Abigail. Get out!"

It's going to take time to get out.  It could take 3 months, 6 months, a year or longer.  But you can, with God's help and the right plan, take your kids and get out.

Next week, I start talking about how to get out.
